How to Repair A Garage Door Opener

Garage doors are very handy tools, especially for people with children, physical problems or if you’re getting on in years.

Garage Door Opener Components

Most garage door openers use a reversible motor that moves a drawbar back and forth along a track in order to open and close the door. The majority of garage door openers have a radio signal that allows for remote manipulation.

Common Garage Door Opener Problems

  1. Neither Remote Nor Wall Switch Works

The power source is almost certainly not working properly. Logic dictates to make sure that it hasn’t been unplugged, then to check the circuit breaker and fuse. Both of these can be easily fixed, however, if this happens often, you may have a short circuit within the opener itself.

If none of these are the problem, then your motor may be burnt out. At this point you need to call in a professional to install a new one.

  1. The Remote Doesn’t Work

Check the batteries first and foremost. Easy solution, but one people might not always think to check.

If the batteries are fine, move a little closer to the door. The range of a garage door opener radio is quite small and the signal can be interfered with fairly easily. This may be the problem, and being closer will fix the issue.

If this isn’t the problem, you should make sure the antenna is hanging down and unobstructed. If it is, then you may need to reprogram your remote. Check your instruction booklet to find out how to do it, or call a professional if you can’t find any other way to do it.

  1. Garage Door Reverses Before or After Touching the Floor

Garage door openers have a close limit adjustment screw that controls close-force. For varying reasons, the screw made need readjusting because it’s too sensitive and assumes the door is closed when it isn’t.

You will need to call a professional to get this fixed because it is a delicate job best suited for people with experience.
