How to Repair A Roll Up Garage Door
Out of all garage door types, roll up doors require the least amount of space, making them ideal for residential homes or small garages. Roll up doors can be either manual or automatic, and generally use spring tension.
Some of the easier problems can be done at home, though even here we can’t say we advise it because it’s possible that you can cause more damage than there was initially, however, for the adventurous types or those who have some experience, here are a few things you can do.
- Check the metal tracks in the garage
If the mounting brackets or loose, you can easily tighten them with a screwdriver. If the tracks themselves look irregular, such as dents on the sides or flat areas, you can try pounding them out with a mallet. However, if the track looks badly damaged, you need to get them replaced and should call a professional.
- Check track alignment
Use a level to make sure that the vertical tracks are perfectly vertical and match each other. If they’re not, you can very carefully loosen the screws or bolts of the mounting brackets and gently tap the track itself to make them perfectly straight. Once they are, retighten the screws or bolts.
- Clean your tracks and rollers
It’s possible that your door jams when being rolled up or down simply because there’s debris clogging up the track. You can use a household cleaner to wipe the tracks free of debris or solidified grease, then wipe them perfectly dry.
When Not to Repair A Roll Up Garage Door
Firstly, if you have any doubt as to your expertise, don’t try it. Attempting to fix a garage door as a novice can possibly lead to more damage, leading to a larger repair bill and maybe even further damage to your home or injure someone.
Secondly, never try to fix a door with only one spring. Then tension being placed on this spring is enormous, and could seriously injure you by snapping back and hitting you. Always call a professional repair company.
